It had been almost eight years since my last time in Thessaloniki, passing through on the way to Samothraki. As IAMX, one of my favourite bands, was playing a show up there, it seemed like a pretty good excuse for a getaway.

It was time for The Boyfriend and I to go on our anniversary holiday, last year it was Pilio, this year we opted for our favourite destination - Zagorohoria, with a few stops along the way.

It had been five long years since I was last in Epirus. I'd really missed this place and I am certain it won't be five more years before I return, more like five months (I hope!).

The trip up north was amazing.

The short version: Itea was fantastically stormy; the time in Ioannina was spent eating good food and wandering around a castle; while Zagoria managed to look even more beautiful than usual, with the leaves changing colours.

Autumnal

The longer versions are as follows: -
* Part One: The journey to Itea, wine, waves and lemon pie.
* Part Two: Coastal roads, castles, catching up with friends and crappy hotels.
* Part Three: Zagorohoria, changing of the leaves, camping and being awed by beauty.

Zagoria is about a half hour drive from Ioannina, so it was not long until we found ourselves driving on the mountainous roads surrounded by the autumnal trees, with their leaves changing to cover every shade of green, yellow, orange and red - just beautiful.

Early to bed, early to rise, despite the fact that we both slept quite badly. A quick coffee and we were off, first east bound, driving along the coast towards Messologgi, which seems to be one of the most boring and ugly places I've visited. The one exception was the strange paddock by the docks, filled with abandoned planes and tanks. We failed to find the castle the town apparently has, but given not even a kafeneio was open, we hightailed it out of there in search of a place with a pulse.
