strangelover: (Island)
The trip to Lesvos was good fun, though it definitely needs more than a couple of days to see this huge island (which comes in as the third largest in Greece, behind Crete and Evia). However have car, will travel. We managed to cover most of the island, much of which I missed as the only way to alleviate car sickness is for me to sleep, but this did mean I didn't see the crazy islander version of driving, which I'm assured by my travel buddies The Boyfriend and binaryjesusbinaryjesus, was a Very Good Thing.

We arrived on Wednesday, collected the car and drove to our hotel on the other side of the island, in Vatera. We stayed at the Aphrodite Hotel, which was quite nice and very reasonably priced. It was also right on the beach and served good food and good ouzo. We did what you're supposed to do on holiday, which is laze on the beach and drink coffee.

Thursday we drove around the island, missing out on walking through the Petrified Forest due to stupidly early closing times, instead we bumbled around Eresos, birth place of Sappho, before going down to the beach where I paddled around, bemoaning my lack of swimsuit. The evening was rounded out by drinking red wine in the ruins of an ancient Temple to Dionysus, starring up at the immense star-filled sky.

Friday we woke and wandered around the island, feeling rather sapped (how can being a passenger in a car knacker you out so much?). The island way of dropping off a hire car is very strange - place remainder of fee and keys in car; shut door, do not lock; leave in busy car park. The airport was equally strange and we walked on the runway to the plane, while the engines were running, something I've not done since the early Nineties somewhere in Asia (Indonesia, I think). The flight took a grand total of 30 minutes, but the consensus was we were too tired to go clubbing, so we got the metro back to mine and ate cheese, strawberries and delicious fresh Belgian chocolates with some homemade wine.
